After two scintilating major tournaments in as many months, ones that saw stalwarts Donovan "F2TeKkz" Hunt and Mossad "Msdossary7" Aldossary take home silverware, competitive FIFA returned in a big way in 2019 with the January FUT Champions Cup. Held in Bucharest, Romania like the first iteration of the FIFA 19 Global Series, the first day of this tourney gave way to some rising superstars and as always, had its noteworthy exits.
Schanzer eSports' Hasan "Hasoo" Eker was the big winner of the day, posting the only 5-0 record on the PlayStation side. The German beat FUTWIZ Marko by a scoreline of 4-3 in the fifth round to secure the perfect record. Marko fell to 4-1, where he joined FC Basel's Tim "TheStrxngeR" Katnawatos, PSV's Stefano Pinna, Team Gullit's Henrique "zezinho23" Lempke, and Marvin "M4RV" Hintz.
To no one's surprise, Hunt continued his rule over the Xbox side with a perfect record, followed closely by 2017 FIWC Champion Spencer "Gorilla" Ealing, Paris Saint-Germain's Lucas "DaXe" Cuilerrier, Hashtag United's Alex "Hashtag Shawrey" Shaw, Dylan Jr, and Dossary's Rogue teammate, Nawid "GoalMachine" Noorzai.
Dossary, the "reigning champion" of sorts in the FUT 19 major cycle, did not have the ideal start to his day. He first dispatched Matheus "SPQR Longaray" Longaray in a tense 6-4 affair, and followed up that performance with another nervy match against Pedro "M10 Resende" Resende. The scoreline stood at 6-6 at the end of regulation, but the Saudi Arabian managed to eke out on penalties, 3-2. Dossary, who had said he was feeling ill earlier in the day, left the tournament early after his 3-0 start, thus forfeiting his final two Friday matchups.
The North's August "Agge" Rosenmeier crashed out after winning only one of four matchups, for one the biggest early upsets of the tournament. The former FIFA Interactive World Champion encountered an unlucky start to the day, losing his first match on penalties after a 6-6 tie against xLevVinken. Rosenmeier went on to win a tough draw against Hintz, beating him 8-7 in a high-octane shootout, but dropped his next game against the German newcomer BunyArda1010.
In what was probably the most back-and-forth match all tournament, another fresh face, Diego "DUX diegog1996" Gonzalez, outlasted Agge 7-4 to finish his campaign. The Dane faced multiple deficits over two legs but came back time and time again, at one point even taking the lead. In the end, however, Gonzalez outlasted his more-experienced opponent.
Eisvogel, the PlayStation champion from last April's tournament in Manchester, was eliminated after an incredible 120th-minute Sergio Ramos header from FC Cincinnati's Gordon "FCC Fiddle" Thornsberry ensured his entry to the knockout stages. The North's Marcus "Marcuzo" Jørgensen, formerly of Manchester City, also saw his tournament end at 2-3, along with Japan's Web Nasri, a surprise from last year's FUT Champions circuit. On the Xbox side, FaZe clan's Tass Rushan bowed out with another loss, after losing a nailbiter in the fifth round.
The action will return Saturday with the last two rounds of the Swiss stage. The proceedings are set to begin at 12 p.m. CET (11 a.m. UK), with the Knockout Rounds following the group stages. You can follow all the action by visiting our homepage or heading directly to Twitch.
